Experience the Sparkle: Southern California’s Holiday Light Shows and Displays
Southern California may not have snow, but it sure knows how to light up the holidays! From neighborhood displays to botanic gardens and zoos, the sparkle is everywhere. Volunteers spend weeks and sometimes months decorating their homes with tinsel, inflatables, and lights just to spread some holiday cheer.
One of the longest-running displays is the Holiday Light Up in Upper Hastings Ranch, Pasadena, now in its 71st year. What started with one street in 1952 has grown to 45 streets and 1,100 homes participating in the festive fun. The dedication of volunteers is truly remarkable, with some using LED lights to reduce energy costs and environmental impact.
In Altadena, Christmas Tree Lane is a sight to behold, with 18,000 lights adorning 155 cedar trees. Volunteers spend weekends hanging lights, with the switch to LED lights significantly reducing the electric bill. The dedication of volunteers like Tony and Maureen Ward, who have been involved since 1971, is truly inspiring.
The key to these displays’ success is the commitment of volunteers year after year. As Scott Wardlaw, President of Christmas Tree Lane Association, puts it, “It’s a good idea, and people decide to do it anyway.” The holiday light shows are a reminder that there is still goodness in the world.
So, if you’re in Southern California this holiday season, be sure to check out these dazzling displays. Remember to dress warmly, bring an umbrella, and maybe even walk the route to avoid traffic. And if you know of any other venues or homes with spectacular displays, be sure to share them with us. Let’s keep the holiday spirit shining bright in Southern California!
