Survey Finds Majority of Homeowners Planning Sustainable Home Improvements in Next Decade
The trend towards sustainable home improvements is on the rise, with a recent report from NatWest revealing that around 67% of homeowners are planning to make eco-friendly changes to their homes in the next decade. This marks the highest number of homeowners intending to make sustainable improvements since 2022, showing a growing interest in environmentally conscious living.
The report also found that 23% of homeowners are planning to make these changes within the next 12 months, indicating a sense of urgency and commitment to sustainability. Additionally, a third of those surveyed said they plan to make sustainable home improvements in the next 1-5 years, showing a long-term commitment to greener living.
Cost remains a primary barrier for those not planning to make sustainable home improvements, with around 68% citing upfront costs as a deterrent. However, the report noted that the proportion of homeowners citing cost as a barrier has decreased, indicating a growing willingness to invest in sustainable upgrades.
Popular sustainable home improvements include electric car charging points, triple-glazed windows, solar panels, and electric boilers. These upgrades not only benefit the environment but also help homeowners save on energy bills in the long run.
Younger homeowners are more in favor of policies that support sustainable home improvements, with 44% of those aged 18-44 expressing support compared to 34% of those aged 45-64. This generational divide highlights the importance of addressing sustainability issues for future homeowners.
Overall, the report underscores the growing importance of sustainability in the housing market and the need for accessible solutions and funding to support homeowners in making eco-friendly upgrades. With the right support and resources, more homeowners can take steps towards a greener future for their homes and the planet.
