Southern California Homes at Risk of Flash Flood Damage: A Closer Look
Flash flooding poses a significant risk to Southern California homes, with approximately 1.1 million residential structures in the region facing moderate to high risks of damage. The recent heavy rains in February, fueled by twin atmospheric rivers, have highlighted the vulnerability of many homes to flash floods.
According to CoreLogic, 21% of all local housing is at risk of suffering damage from flash floods, with replacement costs averaging $454,000 per home. This adds up to a potential $487 billion replacement risk across the region. The risk is particularly high in urban areas with heavily concreted landscapes and hilly terrains, where large rainfalls can lead to overflowing streets and property damage.
Property owners should be aware that typical home insurance policies do not cover flood damage, and a separate flood policy is required. With climate change expected to bring more frequent and intense storms, the risk of flash flooding is likely to increase in the future.
By county, Los Angeles has the highest number of homes at risk, with 420,585 residences facing potential damage. Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, San Diego, and Ventura counties also have significant numbers of homes at risk, with replacement costs ranging from $394,000 to $487,000 per home.
As Southern California continues to face the threat of flash flooding, homeowners are urged to take precautions and ensure they have adequate insurance coverage to protect their properties from potential damage.
