Elissa Slotkin Proposes Legislation to Assist Michigan Residents in Home Improvement and Reduce Energy Expenses

Expanding Federal Program to Help Low-Income Residents with Home Improvements and Energy Bills: Legislation Introduced by US Rep. Elissa Slotkin

US Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) is leading the charge to help low-income residents in Michigan save money on their monthly energy bills through a new federal program. The Weatherization Enhancement and Readiness Act, co-sponsored by Slotkin, aims to expand the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program to cover a wider range of home repairs and energy efficiency upgrades.

The program, which has been in place since 1976, has already helped over 7 million households across the US by providing services such as home energy audits, insulation, thermostat installation, and more. By making these upgrades, households have been able to reduce their energy consumption by up to 40% and save an average of $372 a year on their utility bills.

Slotkin’s legislation would authorize $50 million annually for the program through 2029, doubling the amount of federal funding available to eligible low-income households. This increase in funding would allow more households to receive assistance and cover larger structural repairs, plumbing, roofing, and electrical issues.

The goal of the Weatherization Assistance Program is to make homes healthier, safer, and more energy-efficient for low-income families. By expanding the program and increasing funding, Slotkin and her co-sponsors hope to help homeowners save hundreds of dollars each year on their energy bills.
