Monument to Self-Sufficiency: A Fire-Resistant Home in Montecito, California
Title: A Monument to Self-Sufficiency: The Story of a Fire-Resistant Home in Montecito
In the serene hills of Montecito, California, a remarkable home stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. What was once a modest Mediterranean-style house, belonging to a couple with a passion for art, was transformed into a fire-resistant sanctuary after the devastating Thomas Fire of 2017.
Renowned designer and architect Jamie Bush, along with the architecture firm Shubin Donaldson, took on the challenge of rebuilding the home with a new vision. The result was a house with a minimalist design, constructed from durable materials like fire-resistant metal cladding.
The interior of the home is just as thoughtfully designed as the exterior. The primary suite features white American oak walls that blend seamlessly with the floors, creating a space that feels both modern and inviting. The color palette, inspired by Bauhaus principles, incorporates primary colors throughout the house, adding a vibrant touch to the decor.
The couple’s extensive art collection is prominently displayed throughout the home, featuring works by iconic artists like Alexander Calder, Gerrit Rietveld, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. The centerpiece of the house is a striking perforated metal staircase, coated in a bright yellow hue, reminiscent of artist Olafur Eliasson’s installations.
Surrounded by native plantings and with easy access to the sea, the home seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, creating a self-contained oasis for its owners. It is a true masterpiece of design and functionality, a symbol of rebirth and renewal in the face of adversity.
This story of transformation and resilience originally appeared in the September 2023 issue of ELLE DECOR, showcasing the power of architecture to create harmony between man and nature.
